Healthy eating while back to school

How many of you have picky eaters? Or, maybe you just don't want your kids eating those school lunches that seem to fail them miserably for what they really want and need?

I have been blessed with two boys that like fruits and veggies, but they do face other obstacles and restrictions when it comes to food. So, I've always tried to keep it fun and creative for them!

You are probably wondering why I have a picture of Tupperware and cupcake wrappers attached... well to be honest its how you start this whole process.

Some of the best advice I can give you for young ones is to get them their own containers that they can use weekly.

Once you get them feeling special and looking forward to packing the rest comes natural.

Pick a main source of protein!

I'll share some ideas:

-Natural Turkey

-Sliced Chicken

-Jelly rolls ( most schools restrict peanut butter)

this is a slice of toast with jelly rolled (after cutting crust) and then slicing into sushi style rolls

-Pita Sandwich (stuffed with all your fav-also gluten free in this house)

-Tuna, we add salt, pepper, bread and butter pickles cubed and some egg-dairy free mayo

-Hummus and Veggies-

most kids love the idea of dipping, but have never tried hummus and there are a ton of flavors!

-Beef sticks and cubed cheese

- Whole wheat ( in our house gluten free) tortilla shells add meat or cheese and can then brown and melt in skillet on both sides then slice like pizza

Add three sides:

I like to use the Cup cake wrappers to keep separate (as shown in picture)

-Fruits !! Most contain water and will help keep your child hydrated

-Corn on cob ( cut in half)

- Diced Cucumber

-Celery with Peanut-butter and raisins

-Natural muffins (gluten free-dairy free here)

-Natural salsa (we make most of ours but a good brand is Frogranch) and corn chips (gluten free is better for you as well)

-Hard boiled eggs (pre-peeled)

-Chex

-Banana split:

this is not the split your thinking this is with yogurt( in our house dairy free- almond yogurt)

Layer yogurt, granola, then berries of choice and add 1banana cut in half, half to each side

Hope this helps as you send those babies off.

Keeping them fueled is important and doing that means watching what we put into those tiny growing systems.

I love trying new things and making fun shapes and objects pop as I make these lunches so don't be afraid to have fun as well, they will love it.
